Click on this link to view source. the other ways to view source are to either type view-source:http://www.site.com

or

Right click on this page and click on the view source option. In the <head> </head> you will notice there is no data. To list well you need meta tags.

The most important tags are:

Title Tag:

  • the title tag is the first seen by humans (in search results)
  • the title tag is the first seen by search engines (when they spider the web)
  • because the two above are true the title tag is heavily weighted in most search engines
  • use keywords in the title, but do not repeat words overly frequently
  • never use generic words like "welcome to" or "home"

Description Meta Tag:

  • The description meta tag further describes what your page is about.
  • This is the only other meta tag which is still widely supported.
  • The description meta tag should be longer than the meta title tag and describe thoroughly what your page is about.
  • many search engines also display the description meta tag with the meta title tag

Keyword Meta Tag:

  • While keywords are important the keyword meta tag is not.
  • Of the major search engines and databases only Inktomi officially supports the keyword meta tag, Teoma also unofficially supports this tag.

Inktomi also supports the comments tag, though most people do not use it since it is slighly supported and a type of spam if you abuse it.

Step 4B: Meta Tags (installed)
